Red Sox reinstate left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino from COVID-19 related injured list

Club places right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock on bereavement list

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reinstated left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. The club also placed right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock on the Bereavement List.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Bernardino, 31, has posted a 2.55 ERA (12 ER/42.1 IP) in 43 games (six starts) for Boston this season, including 32 scoreless outings. Claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on April 16, the left-hander has also allowed two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings in three games for Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock, 27, has pitched in 16 games (10 starts) for the Red Sox this season, posting a 5.49 ERA (38 ER/62.1 IP) with 62 strikeouts. Selected from the New York Yankees in the Major League portion of the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, the right-hander has gone 17-10 with a 3.53 ERA (84 ER/214.0 IP) in 93 career appearances (19 starts) for Boston (2021-23).
