BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-Day Injured List, retroactive to June 3, with a right ankle sprain. To fill his spot on the active roster, the club recalled catcher Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Worcester.

Abreu, 24, has played in 53 games this season, batting .272 (46-for-169) with 14 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 22 RBI while making 40 starts in right field. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Houston Astros in 2017, the Venezuela native has batted .286 (70-for-245) with an .840 OPS in 81 career games with the Red Sox (2023-24).

Heineman, 32, has played in one Major League game this season, starting as the Red Sox’ designated hitter on April 21 at Pittsburgh. In 22 games with Worcester, the switch-hitter has batted .235 (16-for-68) with 13 runs scored, two home runs, and eight RBI. Originally selected by the Houston Astros in the eighth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has batted .217 (54-for-249) in 105 career Major League games with the Miami Marlins (2019), San Francisco Giants (2020), Toronto Blue Jays (2022-23), Pittsburgh Pirates (2022-23), and Red Sox (2024).
