Red Sox announce roster moves
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- Selected left-handed pitcher Joely Rodriguez from Triple-A Worcester.
- Optioned right-handed pitcher Greg Weissert to Worcester.
- Transferred left-handed pitcher James Paxton to the 60-Day Injured List.
Rodriguez, 32, owns a 1.88 ERA (3 ER/14.1 IP) and .157 opponent batting average (8-for-51) with 13 strikeouts in 13 games for Worcester. The left-hander made Boston’s Opening Day roster this season and recorded a 6.55 ERA (8 ER/11.0 IP) in 11 games from March 28 through April 26. Originally signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an international free agent in May 2009, the Dominican Republic native has posted a 4.82 ERA (108 ER/168.0 IP) in 179 career games with the Philadelphia Phillies (2016-17), Texas Rangers (2020-21), New York Yankees (2021), New York Mets (2022), and Red Sox (2023-24).
Weissert, 29, has recorded a 4.10 ERA (22 ER/48.1 IP) with 49 strikeouts in 47 games with Boston this season. The right-hander has also posted a 1.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP) in four games with Worcester. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the New York native owns a 4.29 ERA (38 ER/79.2 IP) in 76 career games with the Yankees (2022-23) and Red Sox (2024).
Paxton, 35, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on August 12 with a right calf strain. Acquired by Boston from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 26, the left-hander is 9-3 with a 4.40 ERA (39 ER/100.1 IP) in 21 starts this season for the Dodgers (18 starts) and Red Sox (three starts).
