Red Sox announce roster moves
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- Reinstated right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello from the Paternity Leave List.
- Recalled left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from Triple-A Worcester.
- Selected right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart and catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper from Worcester. Shugart will wear number 61. Gasper will wear number 77.
- Issued an unpaid two-game suspension to outfielder Jarren Duran beginning with tonight’s game against the Texas Rangers.
- Placed left-handed pitcher James Paxton on the 15-Day Injured List with a right calf strain.
- Optioned left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino and right-handed pitcher Brad Keller to Worcester following yesterday’s game against the Houston Astros.
- Designated infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook for assignment.
Bello, 25, will start tonight’s game against the Rangers. The right-hander is 10-5 with a 5.16 ERA (64 ER/111.2 IP) and 109 strikeouts in 21 starts this season. Originally signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2017, the Dominican Republic native is 24-24 with a 4.64 ERA (168 ER/326.0 IP) in 62 career games (60 starts), all with Boston.
Horn, 26, has recorded a 6.39 ERA (9 ER/12.2 IP) in nine games with Boston this season, his Major League debut. Acquired from the Chicago White Sox on April 30, the Texas native also owns a 1.74 ERA (4 ER/20.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and a .169 opponent batting average (12-for-71) in 15 games (one start) with Worcester.
Shugart, 27, has pitched in 29 games (five starts) with Worcester this season, going 4-2 with one save, a 4.98 ERA (33 ER/59.2 IP), and 71 strikeouts. Originally selected by Boston in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has posted a 4.77 ERA (197 ER/371.1 IP) in 155 career minor league games (50 starts), all in the Red Sox organization.
Gasper, 28, has batted .401 (55-for-137) with a 1.017 OPS, 12 doubles, eight home runs, and 32 RBI in 40 games with Worcester since being promoted from Double-A Portland on June 4. The switch-hitter today was named International League Player of the Week, after batting .579 (11-for-19) in five games from August 6-10. In 84 games this season between Portland and Worcester, he has made 35 starts as the catcher, 30 at first base, 13 as the designated hitter, and three at second base. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the New Hampshire native was selected by the Red Sox in the minor league phase of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
Duran, 27, has started all 116 Red Sox games this season, batting .291 (143-for-491) with 80 runs scored, 36 doubles, 13 triples, 14 home runs, 58 RBI, and 29 stolen bases. Originally selected by Boston in the seventh round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has hit .272 (309-for-1,134) in 309 career games (2021-24).
Paxton, 35, was removed from yesterday’s game against Houston in the top of the first inning. Acquired by Boston from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 26, the left-hander is 9-3 with a 4.40 ERA (39 ER/100.1 IP) in 21 starts this season for the Dodgers (18 starts) and Red Sox (three starts).
Bernardino, 32, owns a 3.83 ERA (17 ER/40.0 IP) in 43 games (two starts) this season for Boston. The left-hander has also pitched in two games for Worcester. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has posted a 3.48 ERA (36 ER/93.0 IP) with 98 strikeouts in 100 career Major League games (eight starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2022) and Red Sox (2023-24).
Keller, 29, has recorded a 5.30 ERA (22 ER/37.1 IP) in 15 Major League games (two starts) this season for the Chicago White Sox (five games) and Boston (10 games). Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent on May 26, the right-hander also owns a 4.09 ERA (10 ER/22.0 IP) in seven games (five starts) with Worcester.
Westbrook, 29, has played in 21 games for the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut, making 13 starts at second base. The right-handed hitter has also played in 71 games for Worcester, batting .291 (71-for-244) with an .856 OPS and 49 RBI. He was originally signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
