RED SOX ANNOUNCE PERSONNEL MOVES IN PLAYER DEVELOPMENT, SET MINOR LEAGUE FIELD STAFFS
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced personnel moves in the Player Development department, as well as 2023 field staffs for their minor league affiliates.
Red Sox Director of Player Development Brian Abraham made the announcement.
Shawn Haviland has been promoted to Director, Pitching Development, his fifth season working with the organization’s minor league pitchers. Jason Ochart joins the Red Sox as Director, Hitting Development & Program Design, after working with the Philadelphia Phillies as Hitting Coordinator. Andrew Wright joins the organization as Field Coordinator, after serving as the New York Yankees’ Director of Dominican Republic Baseball Operations. David Besky has been hired as Coordinator, Player Development, and will be based out of Fort Myers, Florida. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he worked at Driveline Baseball Enterprises. Ryan Jackson transitions into a new role as Special Assistant, Player Development, following four years as the Red Sox’ Minor League Field Coordinator.
Joining the organization is Catching Coordinator Tyson Blaser, who last season managed High-A Hudson Valley in the New York Yankees organization. Pitching Coordinator Chris Mears transitions to the organization’s upper levels, while the Red Sox have hired Nick Otte as Pitching Coordinator to focus on the lower levels. Otte most recently spent time as a pitching coach at the University of Central Florida. After serving as the Red Sox’ Coordinator, Player Development, Harry Roberson transitions to the role of Hitting Coordinator, with a focus on the organization’s lower levels. Joining the Red Sox organization is John Soteropulos, who will be based out of Fort Myers as Roving Complex Hitting Coach. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he worked as a hitting trainer at Driveline.
Oscar Gutierrez joins the organization as Mental Skills Coordinator, previously working in similar roles with the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds. Shaun Owen has been promoted to Sport Science Coordinator, after spending the last two seasons in the organization as a sport scientist.

Matt Wheeler returns to the Worcester staff as a bullpen coach, after spending 2021 with the WooSox as a video intern and then serving as a coach on the Greenville staff in 2022. Nick Kuchwara joins Worcester as an Athletic Trainer following time in the same role with Double-A Portland (2022), High-A Greenville (2021), and High-A Salem (2016-20).

Sean Isaac joins the Red Sox organization as Portland’s pitching coach. Most recently, he served as the assistant pitching coach for Triple-A Nashville in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Also new to the Red Sox is Pablo Cabrera, who will serve as one of Portland’s coaches along with Mickey Jiang. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Cabrera worked as a coach for the University of Charleston in West Virginia. Bobby Stachura, who began in the organization as an intern in 2017, joins the Sea Dogs as an athletic trainer after serving in that role for Greenville (2019-20, ’22) and Salem (2021).

Taylor Jackson transitions to the Drive staff as a coach following a stint as the club’s video intern in 2022. New to the organization is Alex Reynolds, who will serve as Greenville’s development coach. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Reynolds worked as a pitching intern at Cressey Sports Performance. Charysse Berkowski joins the Greenville staff as the club’s athletic trainer, after serving as an assistant athletic trainer with Portland in 2022.

Liam Carroll begins his first season in the Red Sox organization as Salem’s manager. He previously worked with Great Britain’s national baseball teams, most recently as infield coordinator. Carroll will serve on Great Britain’s coaching staff for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Also joining the organization is Chase Illig, who will serve as an additional coach for Salem. Illig most recently worked as a coach for the Appalachian Aces, following a playing career in the New York Yankees’ minor league system from 2019-21.
Ozzie Chavez joins the Salem staff as bench coach after managing at the Red Sox’ Dominican Republic Academy from 2019-22. Jason Blanton transitions to the Salem staff as pitching coach, after serving in that same capacity at the Red Sox’ Fort Myers complex from 2021-22. Spencer Ducheny will lead Salem’s strength and conditioning efforts, after a stint as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with Portland in 2022.
