March 24th, 2024

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson to a one-year contract for the 2024 season. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club placed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito on the 60-Day Injured List.

Anderson, 36, appeared in four Grapefruit League games (one start) with the Pittsburgh Pirates this spring, posting a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP) with nine strikeouts, three walks, a 0.73 WHIP, and a .135 opponent batting average (5-for-37). Selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, he has pitched in 218 games (200 starts) for the Diamondbacks (2014-15), Milwaukee Brewers (2016-19), Toronto Blue Jays (2020), Philadelphia Phillies (2021), Cincinnati Reds (2022), Tampa Bay Rays (2023), and Colorado Rockies (2023). From 2014-19, Anderson went 53-40 with a 3.94 ERA (375 ER/857.0 IP).

In 2023, Anderson recorded a 5.42 ERA (52 ER/86.1 IP) in 19 games (17 starts) with the Rays and Rockies. He allowed 22 earned runs in 9.1 innings (21.21 ERA) over a three-start span from June 18-29, but in his other 16 outings he posted a 3.51 ERA (30 ER/77.0 IP). In his final three starts of the 2023 season, Anderson recorded a 1.47 ERA (3 ER/18.1 IP) and held opponents to a .183 slugging percentage, surrendering only one extra-base hit. On September 15 against the San Francisco Giants, he threw 7.0 hitless innings but was removed from the game after throwing 101 pitches and issuing five walks. Anderson made 10 starts last season in which he threw at least 5.0 innings and allowed three runs or fewer, including three scoreless outings.

Giolito, 29, underwent a successful right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair with internal brace on March 12. The right-hander tossed 4.1 innings over two Grapefruit League games (two starts) for the Red Sox this spring. Originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the first round (16th overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 4.43 ERA (499 ER/1,013.2 IP) in 180 career games (178 starts) with the Nationals (2016), Chicago White Sox (2017-23), Los Angeles Angels (2023), and Cleveland Guardians (2023).
