RED SOX ACQUIRE INFIELDER ADALBERTO MONDESI FROM KANSAS CITY ROYALS
Boston Sends Left-Handed Pitcher Josh Taylor to Royals
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired infielder Adalberto Mondesi and a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals, in exchange for left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Mondesi, 27, made his Major League debut in the 2015 World Series and has since played in 358 regular season games, all with the Royals. He has made 241 starts at shortstop, as well as 64 at second base, 20 at third base, and seven as the designated hitter. Dating back to August 2, 2020, he has played 76 consecutive errorless games at shortstop, a Royals franchise record. A switch hitter, Mondesi has batted .244 (311-for-1,273) with 38 home runs, 20 triples, 54 doubles, and 133 stolen bases in 159 attempts (83.6%). In 2022, he appeared in each of the Royals’ first 15 games but missed the remainder of the season with a left knee ACL tear.
A Dominican Republic native, Mondesi signed with the Royals as an international free agent in July 2011. His older brother, Raul Jr. (2010-12) and younger brother, Paul (2016-21) both played Minor League Baseball, while his father, Raul, played 13 Major League seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1993-99), Toronto Blue Jays (2000-02), New York Yankees (2002-03), Arizona Diamondbacks (2003), Pittsburgh Pirates (2004), Los Angeles Angels (2004), and Atlanta Braves (2005).
Taylor, 29, was on the injured list for the entire 2022 season. He made eight rehab appearances (four starts) for Triple-A Worcester and five (three starts) for Double-A Portland. The left-hander owns a 3.69 ERA (42 ER/102.1 IP) with 129 strikeouts in 121 career Major League outings (one start), all with Boston from 2019-21.
