Rays name Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June

The Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Operations Department named infielder Ronny Simon as Minor League Player of the Month and right-handed pitcher Trevor Martin Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June.

Simon, 24, slashed .373/.442/.639 (31-for-83) with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs, 15 RBI, 11 walks, 12 runs and four steals across 25 games in June for Triple-A Durham. Simon had a career-high-tying four hits on June 25 vs. Lehigh Valley, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and one triple. He ranked among the International League in June in batting average (4th), OPS (4th, 1.081), doubles (T4th), extra-base hits (T6th, 13), on-base percentage (7th) and slugging percentage (7th).

Rated Tampa Bay’s No. 26 prospect by MLB.com, Simon ranks among all Rays minor leaguers this season in hits (2nd, 81), total bases (2nd, 130), doubles (T2nd, 21), extra-base hits (T2nd, 31), RBI (4th, 39), runs (5th, 44), slugging percentage (6th, .481), batting average (7th, .300) and OPS (8th, .836).

Martin, 23, began the month making four starts for Class-A Bowling Green, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (20.0IP, 4ER). He struck out a career-high 14 batters on June 4 at Asheville, earning South Atlantic Pitcher of the Week honors. The 14 strikeouts are tied for the second most ­­by a minor league pitcher this season and marked the most by Rays farmhand since Matt Andriese (14SO) on May 3, 2016 at Indianapolis. Martin ranks among South Atlantic League leaders in strikeouts (T1st, 88), ERA (2nd, 2.88), innings (2nd, 72.0), WHIP (4th, 1.10) and opponent batting average (7th, .221). He earned a June 25 promotion to Double-A Montgomery and made one start for the Biscuits to close th­­e month.
