Rays Acquire Brian O’Grady From Reds
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired first baseman/outfielder Brian O’Grady from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a player to be named and cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, first baseman Jesús Aguilar was designated for assignment.
O’Grady, 27, spent most of last season with Triple-A Louisville, where he shared the Mary E. Barney Award as Louisville’s co-Most Valuable Player. He appeared in 28 games and made nine starts over three stints with the Reds, his first career major league action. At the Triple-A level, he hit .280/.359/.550 (120-for-429) with 30 doubles, 28 home runs, 77 RBI and 20 stolen bases, becoming the first player in Louisville history to record at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season. Only one other player in the minor leagues matched his combination of doubles, home runs and stolen bases: outfielder Luis Robert combined for 31 doubles, 32 home runs and 36 stolen bases in the Chicago White Sox system.
O’Grady ranked among International League leaders in home runs (tied for fifth), RBI (tied for eighth), extra-base hits (59, fourth), total bases (236, fifth), slugging pct. (fifth), on-base plus slugging (.909, seventh) and stolen bases (tied for sixth). He was named the Reds Minor League Player of the Month for May, batting .324/.378/.704 (35-for-108) with nine doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 22 RBI and seven stolen bases. Following the season, he was ranked by Baseball America as the Best Defensive First Baseman in the International League in its Best Tools survey.
O’Grady was selected by the Reds in the eighth round of the 2014 June Draft out of Rutgers University, where he earned third team All-Conference honors as a senior. Over six minor league seasons, he is a career .252/.354/.453 (484-for-1,921) hitter with 76 home runs, 299 RBI and 85 stolen bases. He was designated for assignment by the Reds on November 25.
Aguilar, 29, hit .261 (24-for-92) with four home runs in 37 games (26 starts) for the Rays last season after being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jake Faria. The six-year veteran of the Cleveland Indians, Brewers and Rays is a career .256 (293-for-1,143) hitter with 63 home runs and 215 RBI, including a selection to the All-Star Game and 16th place finish in National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2018.
