Oakland, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Jon Gray on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to April 20, with a low-grade left knee sprain. To take his place on the active roster, the team has recalled right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto (#49) from Triple-A Round Rock. Otto will be the Rangers’ starting pitcher for tonight’s series opener against the A’s at Oakland Coliseum.

Gray, the Rangers’ 2022 Opening Day starter, has made 2 starts this season, most recently pitching and suffering the knee injury in the first inning of his start on Tuesday at Seattle (5.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R-ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 2 HR, 77 pitches/49 strikes). He was also on the Injured List from April 9-18 (right middle finger blister) after starting the club’s season opener on April 8 at Toronto. The first date he would be eligible to return from the Injured List is April 30.

Otto, 26, will be working on extended 6 days’ rest after making scoreless starts for Round Rock on April 9 vs. El Paso (ND, 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 SO, 46 pitches/33 strikes) and April 16 at Sugar Land (ND, 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 SO, 53 pitches/33 strikes). Triple-A opponents have batted .087 (2-23) with no extra-base hits and 9 strikeouts/one walk against him this season. Otto went 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA (6 ER/6.1 IP) in 3 games/2 starts with the Rangers during this year’s abbreviated Spring Training, issuing 5 walks against 3 strikeouts.

The Houston native and Rice University product is still seeking his first Major League win after going 0-3, 9.26 (24 ER/23.1 IP) over 6 starts for Texas in his MLB debut last season. The Rangers acquired Otto in a trade with the New York Yankees on July 29, 2021, along with infielders Josh Smith, Trevor Hauver, and Ezequiel Duran, in exchange for outfielder Joey Gallo, left-handed pitcher Joely Rodríguez, and cash considerations.
