Rangers announce Minor League Award winners for May

All four award-winners were rostered by High-A Hickory or Rookie-level ACL Rangers

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the organization’s minor league award winners for May:

Player of the Month – OF Yeremy Cabrera

Starting Pitcher of the Month – RHP Joseph Montalvo

Reliever of the Month – RHP Adonis Villavicencio

Defender of the Month – OF Alejandro Osuna

Cabrera, 18, slashed .341/.444/.750/1.194 (15-44) with a league-high 5 home runs, 3 doubles, 8 RBI, and 6 stolen bases over 14 games for the Rookie-level ACL Rangers in May. He hit safely in 9 of his 14 games last month – including 5 multi-hit outings – to rank among Texas minor leaguers in home runs (T2nd), stolen bases (T3rd), and runs (T8th, 15). He belted a pair of home runs and recorded a season-high 3 RBI on May 6 vs. the ACL Angels. The left-handed batter and thrower made starts at designated hitter (6), left field (4), center field (2), and right field (2) last month. Over parts of three minor league seasons in the Rangers organization (2022-24), Cabrera has slashed .267/.393/.463/.856 with 14 home runs, 9 triples, 12 doubles, and 51 RBI in 110 games. The Baní, Dominican Republic native originally signed to a minor league contract with Texas on January 15, 2022.

Montalvo, 22, went 3-0, 1.40 ERA (4 ER/25.2 IP) with 32 strikeouts/5 walks across 5 starts for High-A Hickory last month, ranking among SAL leaders (min. 20.0 IP) in wins (T1st), strikeout pct. (2nd, 33.0%), WHIP (2nd, 0.78), ERA (4th), and strikeouts (T5th). The right-hander stuck out a career-high 11 batters in Game 2 of a doubleheader on May 24 vs. Asheville (W, 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R-ER, 0 BB, 11 SO, 81 pitches/55 strikes), the 3rd-highest highest single-game strikeout total by any Crawdads pitcher this season (12, 2x, last Ryan Lobus on May 22 vs. Asheville). Montalvo has spent the entire 2024 campaign at High-A, combining to go 3-2, 2.50 ERA (10 ER/36.0 IP) with 43 strikeouts/10 walks in 8 appearances/starts. The Bayamón, Puerto Rico native was originally selected by the Rangers in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Central Pointe Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Fla. and is currently rated among the top prospects in the Texas farm system by MLB Pipeline (no. 26) and Baseball America (no. 29).

The 23-year-old Villavicencio went 2-0 over 14.2 scoreless innings last month for the ACL Rangers. He scattered 5 hits and one walk over 5 relief appearances in May, while striking out 16 and holding opponents to a .102 (5-49) batting average with just one extra-base hit (2B). The right-hander leads all ACL pitchers (min. 15.0 IP) this season in ERA (0.00), saves (2), WHIP (0.38), and opponent’s batting average (.096). He owns a career 3-2 record and 3.83 ERA (21 ER/49.1 IP) with 3 saves over 32 career relief appearances spanning parts of three minor league seasons (2022-24), all spent in the Rangers farm system. A native of Punto Fijo, Venezuela, Villavicencio was signed by Texas as a non-drafted free agent on January 16, 2022.

Osuna, 21, converted all 37 total chances in the outfield for Hickory last month, making 21 starts in center (18) and right field (3). He notched an outfield assist on May 12 at Greenville, pairing with shortstop Sebastian Walcott on an 8-6 putout in the 5th inning. The left-handed batter and thrower has yet to commit an error in 44 chances across 25 games/24 starts in the outfield (18-CF, 6-RF), this while producing a .268/.320/.446/.766 (30-112) slash line, 5 home runs, and 10 RBI at the plate. Osuna, a native of Ahome, Mexico, was originally signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on October 6, 2020.
