August 31st, 2019

The Pirates have claimed left-handed pitcher Wei-Chung Wang (last name pronounced “WONG”) off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. The 27-year-old native of Taiwan went 1-0 with a 3.33 ERA (27.0 IP/10 ER) in 20 relief appearances with Oakland this season, while holding left-handed hitters to a .186 (8-for-43) average. He also made 19 appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas, where he went 1-1 with one save and a 4.78 ERA.

Wang was originally signed as a free agent by the Pirates on Oct. 5, 2011. He was then selected by Milwaukee in the 2013 Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 12.

Wang made his Major League debut with Milwaukee in 2014 and made 14 appearances with the Brewers that season. He also made eight appearances with the Brewers in 2017.

Wang is expected to join the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Gregory Polanco has been transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.
