Pirates announce additional non-roster invitees
In addition to previously announced players Wilmer Difo, Joe Hudson, Andrew Susac, and Troy Stokes, Jr., the following 22 players will attend big league camp as non-roster invitees.
Cody Bolton (RHP) – Is currently ranked by MLBPipeline as Pittsburgh’s fifth-best pitching prospect (#13 overall)…Spent the 2020 season at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site…Was named Pittsburgh’s Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year by MLBPipeline in 2019…Was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft.
Chase De Jong (RHP) – Began the 2020 season with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League before signing a minor league contract with the Astros on August 6…Made a total of three appearances (two starts) with Houston last season…Has made a total of 15 appearances (10 starts) in the big leagues between Seattle (2017), Minnesota (2018-19) and Houston (2020).
Yerry De Los Santos (RHP) – Has spent his entire career with the Pirates after being signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014…Ranked second among Pirates minor leaguers with 13 saves in 2019 while spending the entire season with Single-A Greensboro…Has gone 6-7 with 13 saves and 2.98 ERA (136.0ip/45er) in 68 appearances (14 starts) during his minor league career.
Jandel Gustave (RHP) – Attended spring training in 2020 with San Francisco before being designated for assignment on August 2…Was signed by the Pirates as a minor league free agent on September 5…Posted a 2.96 ERA (24.1ip/8er) in 23 appearances with San Francisco in 2019…Made big league debut with Houston in 2016.
Clay Holmes (RHP) – Was a member of Pittsburgh’s Opening Day roster for the first time in his career last year…Made one appearance for the Pirates last season before suffering a right elbow sprain…Was non-tendered on December 2 before signing a minor league deal with the Pirates on December 4.
James Marvel (RHP) – Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site; also missed time with a right forearm strain…Was Pittsburgh’s Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year in 2019…Made four starts for the Pirates in 2019, including his big league debut on 9/18 vs. St. Louis…Was Pittsburgh’s 36th round selection in the 2015 Draft.
Braeden Ogle (LHP) – Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site…Was selected by the Pirates in the fourth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft…Has gone 7-8 with a 3.10 ERA (130.2ip/45er) in 49 appearances (24 starts) during his minor league career.
Quinn Priester (RHP) – Is currently rated as the #58 overall prospect in the game according to Baseball America…Enters 2021 ranked by MLBPipeline as Pittsburgh’s fourth-best prospect…Is also rated by Baseball America as having the “Best Curveball” in the Pirates system…Spent 2020 season at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site…Was selected by Pittsburgh in the first round (18th overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.
Shea Spitzbarth (RHP) – Did not pitch last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic…Was selected by the Pirates off the Angels’ Double-A Tulsa roster during the minor league phase of the Rule Five Draft on December 10…Has gone 13-15 with 26 saves and a 3.41 ERA (261.2ip/99er) in 174 appearances during his minor league career.
Blake Weiman (LHP) – Was a non-roster invitee with the Pirates last season…Did not pitch in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic…Has gone 9-7 with a 2.88 ERA (131.2ip/32er) in 84 relief appearances during his minor league career…Was Pittsburgh’s eighth round selection in the 2017 Draft.
Jason Delay (C) – Was a non-roster invitee with the Pirates in 2020…Spent 2020 season at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site in Altoona…Was selected by the Pirates in the fourth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft…Has thrown out 32 percent (56-for-177) of the runners attempting to steal against him during his minor league career.
Christian Kelley (C) – Was a non-roster invitee for the fourth straight season with the Pirates in 2020…Spent the entire 2020 season at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site…Entered 2020 season rated by Baseball America as the “Best Defensive Catcher” in Pittsburgh’s minor league system.
Arden Pabst (C) – Was a non-roster invitee with the Pirates last spring training…Has thrown out 35 percent (90-for-254) of the runners attempting to steal against him during his minor league career…Was Pittsburgh’s 12th round selection in the 2016 Draft.
Ji-hwan Bae (INF) – Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site...Was ranked by Baseball America as Pittsburgh’s seventh-best prospect heading into 2020; was also listed by the same publication as the organization’s “Best Hitter for Average”...Was rated by MLBPipeline as the “Best Runner” in the Pirates minor league system at the end of 2020…Hit a combined .309 (141-for-457) with 31 doubles, seven triples, 51 RBI and 41 stolen bases in 121 games in his first two seasons in the Pirates minor league system between the GCL Pirates and Greensboro.
Will Craig (INF) – Spent a majority of the 2020 season at the alternate training site in Altoona…Made Major League debut on August 27 at St. Louis while starting at first base in the first game of a doubleheader…Won a Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove Award at first base after posting a .999 fielding percentage in 2019…Was Pittsburgh’s first round selection (22nd overall) in the 2016 Draft.
Nick Gonzales (INF) – Is currently rated as the #51 overall prospect in the game according to Baseball America…Enters 2021 listed by Baseball America as the “Best Hitter for Average” in the Pirates minor league system; is also ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect for the Pirates according to MLBPipeline…Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site after being selected seventh overall by the Pirates in the first round of the draft earlier in the summer out of New Mexico State University…Was ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect by MLBPipeline and Baseball America prior to the 2020 MLB Draft.
Kevin Kramer (INF/OF) – Did not play last season after undergoing hip surgery in May…Has appeared in 43 games in the big leagues over parts of two seasons (2018-19) with the Pirates…Was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.
Mason Martin (INF) – Was rated by MLBPipeline as having the “Best Power” in Pittsburgh’s minor league system following the 2020 season…Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site…Was Pittsburgh’s Minor League Player-of-the-Year in 2019…His 60 home runs since the beginning of 2017 are the most by all Pirates minor leaguers…Was selected by Pittsburgh in the 17th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft.
Liover Peguero (INF) – Enters 2021 ranked as Pittsburgh’s fifth-best prospect according to MLBPipeline…Was also rated by MLBPipeline as the “Best Athlete” in the Pirates minor league system at the end of 2020…Spent 2020 at Pittsburgh’s alternate training site in his first season with the Pirates after being acquired from Arizona on January 27…Has hit .299 (112-for-374) with 14 doubles, eight triples, six home runs and 59 RBI in 101 career games in the minor leagues.
Cal Mitchell (OF) – Was selected by the Pirates in the second round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft…Is rated as Pittsburgh’s 17th-best prospect by MLBPipeline…Finished 2019 tied for first in the Florida State League in total bases (183), fifth in RBI (64), sixth in home runs (15) and 10th in slugging (.406)…Ranked third among Pirates minor leaguers in RBI (65) in RBI in 2018.
Canaan Smith-Njigba (OF) – Was one of four players acquired from the Yankees in exchange for Jameson Taillon on 1/24...Was tabbed a Baseball America Low Class-A All-Star and South Atlantic League post-season All-Star in 2019 after hitting .307 with 32 doubles, 11 homers and 74 RBI with Charleston...Was also recognized by Baseball America as the South Atlantic League’s “Best Batting Prospect” and “Most Exciting Player” for his efforts with Charleston…Has compiled a .280 batting average (221-for-788), 50 doubles, four triples, 19 home runs and 118 RBI in 226 games since selected by New York in the fourth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft.
Travis Swaggerty (OF) – Enters 2021 rated by Baseball America as the “Best Defensive Outfielder” in the Pirates system…Enters 2021 ranked as Pittsburgh’s seventh-best prospect according to MLBPipeline…Spent 2020 at Pirates alternate training site in Altoona…Was Pittsburgh’s first round selection (10th overall) in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft…Has hit .257 with 30 doubles, five triples, 14 home runs, 60 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 173 games since making his professional debut in 2018.
