David Montgomery, former team president and chief executive officer, will now have a permanent place in Phillies history. On Saturday, August 17, Montgomery will be posthumously inducted into the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame at Citizens Bank Park.

“As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Citizens Bank Park, it is the perfect time to continue our celebration of the 2007-2011 teams who established Red October as one of the best experiences in all of sports,” said Phillies Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer John Middleton. “No person deserves to be this year’s honoree more than David Montgomery who led the effort to design and build our ballpark and presided over one of the best eras in Phillies baseball. This will be a very special tribute for our fans and Phillies family, as David becomes the 48th inductee of the Toyota Wall of Fame.”

The induction ceremony will take place prior to that night’s 6:05 game against the Washington Nationals, being held as part of Toyota Phillies Alumni Weekend festivities (August 16-18). Phillies players who were part of Montgomery’s storied career, as well as Montgomery’s family and Phillies Wall of Famers, will participate in the on-field event.

“David Montgomery was one of those rare men with a brilliant baseball mind, who truly cared about his players and the people he worked alongside,” said Hall of Famer Jim Thome, the 2016 Phillies Wall of Fame inductee. “He loved the City of Philadelphia, and his name is synonymous with the Phillies. I’m thrilled to hear that his impact on the club and his contributions to Citizens Bank Park are being immortalized on the Wall of Fame. Our family can’t wait to celebrate with Lyn and the Montgomery family in August.”

A Philadelphia native who spent 48 years rising from ticket office representative to club president and CEO, Montgomery presided over a period of organizational success that included a then-National League record of 257 straight sellouts (2009-2012), as well as five consecutive NL East titles (2007-2011), back-to-back NL pennants (2008-2009) and the 2008 World Series championship.

Among his many accolades, Montgomery was honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame with the prestigious Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 for his extraordinary efforts to enhance baseball’s positive impact on society. Montgomery passed away after a five-year battle with cancer in May 2019.
