February 17th, 2023

The Phillies have signed left-handed reliever José Alvarado to a three-year contract extension, taking him through 2025 with a club option for 2026, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Alvarado, 27, was tied for the team lead with 59 appearances in 2022, posting a 3.18 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 51.0 innings, while holding opponents to a .203/.296/.289 slash line with just two home runs. He posted a 0.43 ERA over his final 22 appearances of the regular season, allowing one run in 21.0 innings. Alvarado led all Phillies relievers with 1.7 fWAR in 2022 and his 14.29 strikeouts per nine innings were the most by any Phillies reliever ever to pitch at least 50.0 innings in a season and ranked fourth among qualifying major league relievers. In his two seasons with the Phillies, the Venezuela native is 11-3 with seven saves, a 3.71 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 106.2 innings over 123 appearances.

Per Statcast data, Alvarado threw 207 pitches at 100.0 mph or harder in 2022, the most among all left-handed pitchers and sixth-most in baseball. Since pitch tracking began in 2008, Aroldis Chapman is the only southpaw with more career pitches at 100.0 mph or more than Alvarado’s 457.
