Phillies re-sign Realmuto

January 29th, 2021

The Phillies have re-signed catcher J.T. Realmuto to a five-year contract, taking him through 2025, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

During the shortened 2020 season, Realmuto, 29, batted .266 with 11 home runs, 32 RBI and an .840 OPS in 47 games. Following the season, he was selected to the All-MLB Second Team and among all major league catchers, he ranked tied for first in home runs (11) and was tied for second in RBI (32) and extra-base hits (17). In 2019, his first season with the Phillies, Realmuto hit .275 and reached career highs with 36 doubles, 25 home runs and 83 RBI in 145 games en route to winning his first Gold Glove Award and second consecutive Silver Slugger. He became the first Phillies catcher to win both awards in the same season and, overall, the first Phillie to do so since Jimmy Rollins in 2007.

The 2019 season also saw Realmuto throw out a career-high 37 runners attempting to steal, which led all major league catchers and was the most by any Phillies catcher since 1993 (Darren Daulton). He was selected to his second consecutive All-Star team and was named catcher on the inaugural All-MLB First Team. He also became only the third catcher in major league history with 90 runs, 35 doubles and 25 home runs in a season, joining Hall of Famer Johnny Bench (1970 and 1974) and Jorge Posada (2000).

Over the last four seasons (2017-20), among all National League position players, Realmuto ranks fourth in WAR (Fangraphs) at 16.7 behind only Christian Yelich (20.7), Nolan Arenado (18.3) and Freddie Freeman (17.0). Per Statcast data, in 2020, Realmuto ranked in the 95th percentile among all major league catchers in framing and among all position players, ranked in the 88th percentile in barrel percentage and the 84th percentile in sprint speed. In 2019, the last year that Statcast tracked catcher pop time, Realmuto led major league catchers with an average of 1.89 seconds on throws from home plate to second base.

Realmuto is a three-time club nominee for the esteemed Heart & Hustle Award, presented annually by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, first in 2017 and 2018 with the Miami Marlins and again in 2019 with the Phillies.

Originally selected in the third round of the June 2010 draft by the Marlins, Realmuto was traded to the Phillies on February 7, 2019, in exchange for catcher Jorge Alfaro and pitchers Sixto Sánchez and Will Stewart.

To make room for Realmuto on the 40-man roster, the Phillies have designated right-hander Ian Hamilton for assignment. Hamilton had been claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on December 7, 2020.
