Phillies select Pinto from Lehigh Valley; designate Brogdon for assignment
Prior to tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, the Phillies selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Ricardo Pinto from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for him on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Connor Brogdon was designated for assignment. Pinto will wear No. 51.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Pinto, 30, signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in February and appeared in four games with the club in major league spring training as a non-roster invitee, striking out three hitters in 5.2 innings. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 2024 Caribbean Series after going 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA (ER, 10.2 IP), three walks and 14 strikeouts in two starts for Venezuela in the tournament. The 6-foot righty was previously signed by Philadelphia as an amateur free agent in 2011 and was selected as the Paul Owens Award winner as the top pitcher in the Phillies system in 2015. Pinto made 25 appearances with Philadelphia in 2017 and two appearances with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019.
After making his fourth consecutive Opening Day roster with the Phillies this season, Brogdon, 29, allowed six earned runs in three outings (2.0 innings). He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
