Prior to today’s game against the New York Mets, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Nelson from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Nelson on the 28-man roster, left-handed pitcher Michael Plassmeyer was optioned to the spring training complex following last night’s contest.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Nelson, 27, went 7-3 with a 3.83 ERA (49 ER, 115.0 IP), 92 strikeouts and 43 walks in 25 starts between single-A Clearwater (2), double-A Reading (3) and Lehigh Valley (20) this season. He tied a career high with 7.0 innings pitched on July 19 at Toledo and allowed two or fewer runs in 18 of his starts. Nelson appeared in 47 games (2 starts) with the Phillies last year, posting a 4.85 ERA (37 ER, 68.2 IP) with 69 strikeouts to 36 walks. The Panama City, Fla., native also pitched 1.0 inning in Game 3 of the 2022 World Series.
Nelson was selected by the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft and was acquired by the Phillies via trade on Nov. 19, 2021.
Plassmeyer, 26, tossed 3.2 innings for the Phillies in game two of yesterday’s doubleheader. It was the first start of his major league career and his first appearance with the club since Oct. 5, 2022. Plassmeyer appeared in 19 games (17 starts) between single-A Jersey Shore (3) and Lehigh Valley (16) this season, going 3-4 with 83 strikeouts in 75.2 innings pitched.
Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, the St. Louis, Mo., native was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on June 8, 2022, and re-signed with the club as a minor league free agent on June 23, 2023.
