Phillies announce baseball operations extensions

December 19th, 2022

The Phillies have extended the contracts of Vice President and General Manager Sam Fuld and Assistant General Managers Ned Rice and Jorge Velandia.  Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement today. Each extension will go through the 2025 season.

Fuld, 41, has been with the Phillies since November 2017 and just completed his second season as the club’s general manager.  Fuld was promoted to his current role on December 22, 2020.  A 2004 graduate of Stanford University and a former major league outfielder, Fuld played parts of eight seasons (2007; 2009-15) for four teams: the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins.

“The Phillies have been nothing short of first class in my time here,” said Fuld.  “I’m thrilled to continue to work for such a tremendous organization in a city that my family and I love so much.  We have an exceptional group of players, staff and employees that I'm excited to grow with over the next few years.”

Rice, 39, has served as assistant general manager for the Phillies since January 2016 and spent two months as interim general manager from Oct. 10-Dec. 10, 2020.  A 2005 graduate of the College of William & Mary, Rice has helped map out strategy of roster management, overseen the research and development department and assisted in player contracts and negotiations, transactions, salary arbitration and rules compliance with the Phillies.

Velandia, 47, was promoted to assistant general manager in December 2020 and became the first Venezuelan-born executive to hold that position in major league history.  After an 18-year professional career (1992-2009), Velandia has spent the last 13 years with the Phillies in various front office roles.  He appeared in 174 career major league games from 1997-2008 with the San Diego Padres, Athletics, New York Mets, Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Guardians.
