July 27th, 2024

The Phillies have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor league pitchers Sam Aldegheri and George Klassen.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Estévez, 31, has posted a 2.38 ERA (9 ER, 34.0 IP) and 0.74 WHIP (5 BB, 20 H) in 34 appearances for the Angels this season. Among the 374 pitchers in Major League Baseball this year with at least 30.0 innings pitched, Estévez’s 0.74 WHIP ranks third, trailing only Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase (0.66) and Hunter Gaddis (0.71). He is 20-for-23 in save opportunities this year and since May 20, has converted each of his last 14 and has posted a 0.64 ERA (1 ER, 14.0 IP) and 0.36 WHIP (2 BB, 3 H) in those save chances.

A 6-foot-6 right-hander, Estévez has faced 124 batters this season and held them to a .169/.202/.288 slash line with a .490 OPS that ranks 11th out of those 374 pitchers with at least 30.0 innings pitched. A native of Santo Domingo, D.R., he has faced 61 right-handed hitters this year, holding them to a .169 batting average and .502 OPS. Conversely, he has faced 63 left-handers, and has held them to a .169 batting average and .476 OPS.

The reigning American League Reliever of the Month for June, Estévez has a streak of 18 straight scoreless (since 5/28), over which he has 15 strikeouts to two walks and has held the 58 batters he has faced to a .054/.086/.054 slash line during that stretch.

A 2023 AL All-Star, he set an Angels franchise record as he successfully converted his first 23 save opportunities to begin the 2023 season, eclipsing the previous mark held by Hall of Famer Lee Smith (19 straight).

A veteran of eight major league seasons (2016-24), Estévez has pitched for the Colorado Rockies (2016-17; 2019-22) and Angels (2023-24). He was originally signed by the Rockies as an amateur free agent on May 31, 2011.

Aldegheri, 22, was 6-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 starts between single-A Jersey Shore and double-A Reading this season. A native of Verona, Italy, he was originally signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on June 13, 2019.

Klassen, 22, was 3-2 with a 1.97 ERA in 14 starts for single-A Clearwater and Jersey Shore this year. A native of West Bend, Wis., he was originally selected by the Phillies in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
