Padres sign RHP Brent Honeywell to one-year contract
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell to a one-year contract through the 2023 season, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
Honeywell, 27, made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2021 and appeared in three games for the Rays after missing the previous three seasons due to injury (2018-20). Originally drafted by the Rays in the second round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out Walters State Community College (Morristown, Tenn.), Honeywell has posted a 3.21 ERA (185 ER, 518.0 IP) across 123 minor league appearances (93 starts) and made his Major League debut on April 11, 2021 vs. New York (AL). In his stint with TB in 2021, he made three appearances (two starts) for a 8.31 ERA (4 ER, 4.1 IP), and right-handed batters went 2-for-11 (.182) against him. The 2016 Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year started for the U.S. in the 2017 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Miami, earning MVP honors.
The native of Augusta, Ga. was acquired by the Oakland A’s in exchange for cash considerations on November 19, 2021, and he split the 2022 season between Single-A Stockton and Triple-A Las Vegas in the A’s organization, making 13 appearances (two starts) with a combined 7.08 ERA (16 ER, 20.1 IP). The 6-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher struck out 24 batters with eight walks allowed. Following the minor league season, Honeywell appeared in seven games (making six starts) for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League, and he posted a 0.96 ERA (3 ER, 28.0 IP), a 0.64 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts against six walks allowed.
The Padres now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
