Padres sign Jurickson Profar to three-year contract
Agreement includes player options following 2021 and 2022 seasons, mutual option for 2024
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed infielder/outfielder Jurickson Profar to a three-year contract through the 2023 season which includes player options following both the 2021 and 2022 seasons and a mutual option for 2024, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
Profar, 27, set career highs in AVG (.278) and OBP (.343) with the Padres last season, posting six doubles, seven home runs, 25 RBI and 28 runs scored in 56 games played. The switch-hitter was successful in seven of his eight stolen base attempts (88%) in 2020 and is now 26-for-28 (93%) over the last three seasons, the second-highest conversion rate in the majors over that span (min. 25 attempts). Last year, Profar committed just one error in 104 total chances (.990 fielding %), making 36 appearances in left field, 17 at second base, two in right field, one in center field and one at first base.
The Willemstad, Curacao native has made 208 career appearances at second base, 104 at shortstop, 89 at third base, 45 at first base, 74 in left field and 36 as a designated hitter. Profar spent the first nine seasons of his professional career in the Texas Rangers organization and is a career .238 hitter (428-for-1796) with 86 doubles, 11 triples, 59 home runs, 222 RBI and 250 runs scored in 547 Major League games. He played for Netherlands in the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic and was selected to back-to-back Futures Games for the World Team in 2011-12.
