Oakland A’s to retire Dave Stewart’s No. 34 on Sunday, Sept. 11
Team to also celebrate 1972 World Series Team on June 4 and 2002 Streak Team on Aug. 28
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics will retire Dave Stewart’s No. 34 on Sunday, Sept. 11, when the team hosts the Chicago White Sox. Fans in attendance for Stewart’s Sept. 11 ceremony will receive a replica Stewart jersey before the game.
“Dave is one of the great legends in Oakland A’s history. He exemplifies what it means to be an Oakland A. He gave his heart and soul to this Club and our Oakland community,” said Oakland A’s President Dave Kaval. “It seems fitting that Dave wore Rollie Fingers’ number - another legendary Athletics pitcher. We retired Rollie’s No. 34 in 1993, and we are proud to add Stew’s No. 34 to honor and celebrate his incredible contributions to our Club.”
Stewart’s famous “Death Stare” was nearly as merciless as his pitching. Born in Oakland and a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School, he spent six seasons in the Majors with three teams before breaking through with the A’s. He joined Oakland in 1986 and won 20 games in four consecutive seasons from 1987 to 1990. The big-game pitcher went 8-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 14 Postseason starts, including two wins in the 1989 World Series when he earned MVP honors in the A’s sweep of the Giants.
The Club’s season celebrations will also include the 1972 World Series Champion Team reunion on Saturday, June 4, and the 2002 Streak Team reunion on Sunday, Aug. 28.
The 1972 A’s won the first World Series championship for the Athletics in Oakland. Led by World Series MVP Gene Tenace, the A’s beat the Cincinnati Reds in Game 7 to give the franchise its first championship since 1930.
The 2002 team made history by winning 20 games between Aug. 13 and Sept. 4, 2002 and setting an American League record for consecutive victories. The A's went on to win the AL West with a record of 103-59.
