Dodger outfielder wins sixth Rawlings Gold Glove
LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Dodger outfielder Mookie Betts has been named 2022 National League Gold Glove Award winner for right field, winning his second Rawlings Gold Glove in the National League and his sixth overall (2016– ‘20, 2022).
Betts, 30, records his second Gold Glove in Dodger Blue and becomes one of four Dodger players to record multiple Gold Gloves in the outfield, joining Matt Kemp (2009, 2011), Raul Mondesi (1995, 1997) and Willie Davis (1971-1973). The Nashville native is one of nine Dodger outfielders to receive the honor, joining Bellinger (2019), Andre Ethier (2011), Matt Kemp, Steve Finley (2004), Raul Mondesi, Dusty Baker (1981), Willie Davis and Wally Moon (1960).
In his third season with the Dodgers, Betts finished second in the National League with 136 games in right field, while recording a .994 fielding percentage with two errors and eight outfield assists. He was among the National League right field leaders in games (2nd), innings played (1154.1, 2nd), assists (T-3rd), Ultimate Zone Rating (12.5, 1st), range runs or RngR (7.7, 1st), Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games (15.2, 1st) and Defensive Runs Saved (15, 1st). According to the SABR Defensive Index, Betts was the top right fielder with a score of 11.9, ranking seven points better than Arizona’s Daulton Varsho, who finished with a 4.8 score in right field.
The former fifth round pick out of Overton High School in Nashville, TN is the 22nd outfielder in Major League history to win six or more Rawlings Gold Gloves and the third outfielder in Major League Baseball history to win multiple Gold Gloves in both leagues, joining Jim Edmonds (1997-‘98, 2000-‘05) and Dave Winfield (1979-‘80, 1982-‘85, 1987). Since joining the Major Leagues in 2014, Betts has played 1,069 games in the outfield, recording a .990 fielding percentage with 60 assists and 24 errors in 9293.2 innings. During his Major League career, he ranks among the Major League outfield leaders in innings played (3rd), assists (T-3rd), Ultimate Zone Rating (94.1, 1st), range runs or RngR (60.1, 2nd), Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games (13.8, 1st) and Defensive Runs Saved (145, 1st). According to Fangraphs, his 145 runs saved are the second most by any outfielder in Major League history, behind only Jason Heyward (151).
To determine the winners of the 18 defensive position Awards, each team’s manager and up to six coaches on his staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added the SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, which comprises approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers’ and coaches’ votes continuing to carry the majority.
