Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt of the Oakland Athletics has been voted the American League Pitcher of the Month for September, and All-Star starter Trevor Bauer of the Cincinnati Reds has been named the National League Pitcher of the Month for September. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Bassitt earned his first career Pitcher of the Month Award and is the first A’s hurler to take home monthly honors since his rotation-mate Sean Manaea, who did so in April 2018. Bauer also earned his first Pitcher of the Month Award and is the first Reds pitcher to accomplish the feat since his All-Star rotation-mate Luis Castillo in April 2019.

• Across eight starts, compiled a perfect 3-0 record with 25 strikeouts, five walks and a 0.34 ERA over 26.2 innings pitched, while permitting 23 hits and just a single home run.

• Tossed 6.2-or-more scoreless frames in three of his four starts during his award-winning month, and allowed just a single run in his other outing.

• Became the third pitcher in franchise history to log at least 25.0 innings and not give up more than one run in a month, joining Rube Waddell (May 1906) and Eddie Rommel (April 1924). Was the first Major Leaguer to accomplish the feat since Chris Sale of the Boston Red Sox in July 2018.

• Following his dominant month on the mound, Bassitt finished his strong 2020 campaign with a 5-2 record to go along with a 55:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 2.29 ERA across 11 starts and 63.0 innings of work.

Trevor Bauer, Cincinnati Reds (@baueroutage)

• Registered a 2-2 record with 46 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA across five starts, while limiting the opposition to 22 hits, three home runs, and just 12 walks.

• On September 9th against the Chicago Cubs, pitched 7.2 scoreless innings with 10 punchouts while allowing only four baserunners. Marked the eighth outing in franchise history in which a pitcher tallied at least 10 strikeouts while not allowing a free pass and no more than three hits, and the first since Johnny Cueto in 2014.

• Earned his fifth win of the season in his final start on Wednesday, tossing a season-best 8.0 innings of one-run ball with 12 strikeouts while allowing just a single free pass. The outing was his fifth double-digit strikeout effort of the season.

• The Cy Young Award candidate finished his impressive 2020 season as the NL’s leader in ERA (1.73), WHIP (0.79) and opponent batting average (.159), as well as the runner-up to the reigning back-to-back NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets in strikeouts (100). 

Others receiving votes for AL Pitcher of the Month included All-Star Shane Bieber (3-1, 2.55 ERA, 38 SO, 24.2 IP) and Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 1.97 ERA, 37 SO, 32.0 IP) of the Cleveland Indians, as well as All-Star Gerrit Cole (3-1, 1.00 ERA, 34 SO, 5 BB) of the New York Yankees.

Others receiving votes for NL Pitcher of the Month included Kyle Hendricks (3-1, 1.45 ERA, 30 SO, 37.1 IP) of the Chicago Cubs; Corbin Burnes (3-1, 1.32 ERA, 42 SO, 27.1 IP) of the Milwaukee Brewers; Richard Rodriguez (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 G, 16 SO) of the Pittsburgh Pirates; and Trevor’s aforementioned rotation-mate Castillo (4-1, 2.20 ERA, 37 SO, 32.2 IP).
