MIAMI – In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking Baseball's color barrier, the Miami Marlins will host various activities for the South Florida community that spotlight Jackie's legacy and his nine values.
The Marlins, in conjunction with the Miami Marlins Foundation, have organized the following events in celebration of Jackie Robinson Day:
-- The Marlins will host City Year Miami Learning & Development Day presented by Morgan Stanley at loanDepot park on Friday, April 15 for 80 City Year corps members who are dedicated to the education of at-risk youth in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The group will participate in a training and skill-building session, with Jackie's nine values as the theme.
-- The Marlins will host approximately 100 young female baseball players from USA Baseball and MLB’s Trailblazer Series on Friday, April 15 at loanDepot park, connecting the players with Marlins General Manager Kim Ng for an intimate conversation.
-- Two local high schools - Northwestern Senior and North Miami Beach Senior High - will take the field at loanDepot park on Monday, April 18 for the inaugural Jackie Robinson Classic presented by NIKE. The students will receive customized Marlins shirts in their respective school colors with the number 42 on the back along with one of Jackie's nine values. The event is open to the public, with complimentary access for all.
The Marlins organization has continuously integrated Jackie Robinson’s legacy into the organization’s mission and principles, cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment for staff and the community at large. Each year, the Marlins recognize the Jackie Robinson Employee of the Year for the front office staff member that best exhibits Jackie’s nine values. In addition, the Marlins have hosted intimate conversations about the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson with members of 5000 Role Models, Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
To help continue the work of Jackie, the Marlins and Miami Marlins Foundation announced a $420,000 donation to the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) in 2020. The substantial contribution supports the JRF Scholarship program, yielding a $20,000 annual four-year scholarship for a deserving outstanding African American student from South Florida that demonstrates Jackie’s nine values. With the support of Nike, the organization awarded its first scholarship in the fall of 2021 to Natalia W., who is attending Howard University.
