Miami Marlins acquire top prospects INF Starlyn Caba and OF Emaarion Boyd from Philadelphia Phillies

Caba and Boyd are ranked 3rd and 14th in Phillies system respectively, with the shortstop ranked as a consensus top 100 overall prospect across Baseball America, FanGraphs, and MLB Pipeline

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the team has acquired top prospects shortstop Starlyn Caba and outfielder Emaarion Boyd from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo and Minor League catcher Paul McIntosh.

Caba, 19, hit .228 (61x268) with a .385 on-base percentage, 10 extra-base hits, 26 RBI, 50 stolen bases, and 67 walks against 49 strikeouts during his age-18 season in 2024 between the FCL Phillies and Low-A Clearwater. His 37 stolen bases in 52 games with the FCL Phillies led the league, while he also ranked first in walks (51), and was tied for first in runs (44). Signed as an international free agent on January 15, 2023, the Bonao, Dominican Republic, native made his professional debut with the DSL Phillies White in 2023, batting .301 (40x133) with four extra-base hits, 17 RBI, 16 stolen bases, and 28 walks against 16 strikeouts. Caba is ranked as a top 100 prospect by Baseball America (54th overall), FanGraphs (71) and MLB Pipeline (81), and the Phillies’ No. 3 overall prospect by Baseball America and FanGraphs, and No. 4 by MLB Pipeline. The shortstop has posted a .970 fielding pct. in 108 games at the position (853.1 innings) during his first two campaigns. The switch hitter was named a Dominican Summer League Mid-Season All-Star in 2023.

Boyd, 21, batted .239 (84x351) with 13 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 40 RBI, and 27 stolen bases in 96 games with High-A Jersey Shore during his third professional campaign in 2024. The outfielder, who is ranked as the Phillies’ No. 14 overall prospect by FanGraphs and No. 23 by MLB Pipeline, has combined for a .256 AVG (187x73) and .348 OBP in 198 Minor League games since his debut in 2022, with his 57 stolen bases in 2023 ranking 2nd in the Florida State League and earning him MiLB.com Organization All-Star honors. The right-handed hitter was originally selected by Philadelphia in the 11th round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of South Panola High School in Batesville, Miss.

Luzardo, 27, went 3-6 with a 5.00 ERA (37 ER/66.2 IP), 22 walks, and 58 strikeouts in 12 starts for the Marlins last season. Overall, he went 21-28 with a 4.15 ERA (186 ER/403.0 IP) in 74 starts over parts of four seasons with Miami. Luzardo was originally acquired by the Marlins in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on July 28, 2021.

McIntosh, 27, batted .246 (103x418) with 18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, and 55 RBI in 117 games with Double-A Pensacola during the 2024 campaign. The catcher slashed .249/.359/.434 (272x1091) with 56 doubles, five triples, 45 home runs, and 172 RBI in 308 Minor League games in the Marlins system from 2022-24, originally signing with the organization as a non-drafted free agent on July 24, 2021.

With today’s move, the Marlins’ 40-man roster now stands at 39.
