Mets sign All-Star infielder Joey Wendle
FLUSHING, N.Y., November 30, 2023 – The New York Mets today announced the club has signed infielder Joey Wendle to a one-year contract.
Wendle, 33, spent last season with the Miami Marlins, appearing in a total of 112 games. He hit 16 doubles and two home runs, collected 20 RBI and scored 33 runs in 2023.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, 195-pound infielder has played over 1,400 innings at second base, third base and shortstop, starting at least 150 games at each position. Since 2021, Wendle ranks ninth in the majors with 11 defensive runs saved at second base despite playing the 99th-most innings at the position over the last three years. He also ranks 10th in the majors with 18 defensive runs saved as shortstop over the last three seasons.
The left-handed hitter batted .265/.319/.422 in 136 games in 2021. He recorded 73 runs, 31 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 54 RBI and was named to the 2021 American League All-Star roster.
Wendle also appeared in all 20 games of the Rays’ AL Championship run in the 2020 Postseason, recording 11 hits and two doubles with five RBI.
In 2018, Wendle led all rookies in bWAR (4.9), batting average (.300), on-base percentage (.350) and triples (six) and was second among rookies in hits (146), doubles (33) and runs (62) with the Rays. Wendle finished fourth in the AL Rookie of the Year Award voting.
The eight-year major league veteran was originally drafted by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He made his major league debut for Oakland in 2016, spending two seasons there before playing with Tampa Bay (2018-21) and Miami (2022-23). He has slashed .263/.312/.386 with 128 doubles, 12 triples, 32 homers, 219 RBI and 61 stolen bases in 649 major league games.
