Mets claim INF Robel García
FLUSHING, N.Y., October 26, 2020 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has claimed infielder Robel García off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. In a corresponding move, outfielder Ryan Cordell has been designated for assignment.
García, 27, was part of Cincinnati’s 60-man player pool during the 2020 season, but did not appear in a major league game. The switch-hitting Dominican Republic native made his major league debut in 2019 for the Cubs, playing in 31 games overall for Chicago and collecting two doubles, two triples, five home runs and 11 RBI with a .500 slugging percentage.
García was originally signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in 2010 and did not appear in a professional game from 2014-2016. He signed a minor league contract with Chicago-NL in 2019 after spending two seasons playing overseas in the Italian Baseball League.
Cordell, 28, appeared in five games for New York in 2020 and had one hit in eight at-bats.
