LHP Bennett Sousa undergoes surgery
HOUSTON, TX – Astros LHP Bennett Sousa underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome yesterday, General Manager Dana Brown announced today. As a result, he is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season.
Sousa, who posted a 3.38 ERA (3ER/8IP) in eight appearances in Spring Training, began the regular season on the Injured List due to discomfort in his left shoulder.
Sousa was claimed off waivers from Detroit on Sept. 3, 2023 and assigned to Triple A Sugar Land. After being called up to the big club on Sept. 14, he would allow just one hit in 6.1 scoreless innings of work for the Astros over five relief appearances with no walks and eight strikeouts (allowed just one baserunner).
Sousa, 28, has made a combined 32 relief appearances in the Majors over the past two seasons (2022-23) for the White Sox, Brewers and Astros.
