D-backs agree to terms with Asdrúbal Cabrera on a 1-year contract; place Luis Frías on the injured list
The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with INF Asdrúbal Cabrera (as-DROO-buhl) on a 1-year contract. To make room for Cabrera on the 40-man roster, the D-backs placed RHP Luis Frías on the injured list.
Cabrera, 35, is a 2-time American League All-Star (2011-12), 2011 AL Silver Slugger Award winner (shortstop) and was a member of the Nationals’ 2019 World Series championship club. He ranks among all active switch-hitters in RBI (1st, 827), hits (1st, 1,692), games (1st, 1,712), doubles (1st, 380), runs scored (1st, 852) and home runs (3rd, 188).
Since joining the Nationals on Aug. 6, 2019, Cabrera’s 71 RBI are the seventh most in the National League, trailing Freddie Freeman/ATL (87), Marcell Ozuna/STL-ATL (83), Corey Seager/LAD (81), Juan Soto/WSH (76), Pete Alonso/NYM (75) and Bryce Harper/PHI (74).
In 2020, the Venezuela native batted .242 (46-for-190) with 9 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs and 31 RBI in 52 games. He appeared in 25 games at first base, 17 at third and 11 at designated hitter, and hit .314 AVG/.315 OBP/.686 SLG vs. left-handers.
Cabrera is a career .268 hitter (1,692-for-6,323) with 380 doubles, 28 triples, 188 home runs and 827 RBI in 1,712 Major League games with the Indians (2007-14), Nationals (’14, ‘19-20), Rays (’15), Mets (’16-18), Phillies (’18) and Rangers (’19). He owns a career .766 OPS vs. left-handers and a .752 OPS vs. righties.
Frías, 22, spent all of last season at the D-backs’ Alternate Training Site.
