Cubs recall INF Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa, option INF Matt Mervis to Iowa
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder Matt Mervis to Iowa.
Mastrobuoni, 28, made Chicago’s Opening Day roster for the second-straight year and appeared in eight games for Chicago, going 0-for-12 with an RBI and two runs scored prior to being optioned to the I-Cubs April 18. In 10 games with Iowa this season, the left-handed hitting infielder has gone 9-for-39 (.231) with five doubles, one home run, four RBI and 10 runs scored. On May 2 vs. Omaha, Mastrobuoni went 3-for-5 with one double, one home run and four RBI.
The five-foot 11-inch Mastrobuoni was acquired by the Cubs from Tampa Bay Nov. 15, 2022 for right-handed pitcher Alfredo Zarraga. In 76 career major league games with Tampa Bay (2022) and Chicago (2023-24), Mastrobuoni is batting .217 (35-for-161) with five doubles, one home run and six RBI.
A San Ramon, Calif., native, Mastrobuoni was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 14th round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Nevada, In 664 career minor league games across eight seasons in the Rays (2016-22) and Cubs (2023-24) organizations, he owns a career .286 (680-for-2,379) average.
Mervis, 26, played in nine games for Chicago, going 3-for-26 (.115) with one double and three RBI. The left-handed hitting infielder began the season in Iowa, batting .288 (19-for-66) with five home runs and 13 RBI prior to his April 23 recall.
