December 29th, 2024

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired infielder Vidal (vee-DAHL) Bruján (brew-HAHN) from the Miami Marlins in exchange for infielder Matt Mervis and cash considerations. The 40-man roster stands at 39 players.

Bruján, 26, recently completed his fourth major league season—first with the Marlins—during which he hit .222 (55-for-248) with two home runs and 16 RBI in 102 games. He made at least one appearance at every position except catcher last season with the Marlins—including 1.2 IP—while making the most at second base (31 G, 22 GS) and shortstop (28 G, 25 GS).

He previously spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays (2021-23) and, over his career, has appeared in 201 major league games, hitting .189 (94-for-497) with five home runs and 40 RBI. A native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Bruján was originally signed by the Rays organization as a free agent on October 17, 2014, and was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star for Tampa Bay in 2018 and 2019.

Mervis, 26, appeared in 36 major league games in parts of two seasons with the Cubs hitting .155 (18-for-116) with three home runs and 14 RBI.
