Brenton Doyle awarded National League Rawlings Gold Glove at center field

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies’ Brenton Doyle has been named the winner of the 2023 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award at center field. He becomes the third Rockies outfielder to claim the honor, joining Larry Walker (1997-99, 2001-02) and Carlos González (2010, 2012-13). Doyle also becomes the ninth player overall in franchise history to win a Gold Glove, joining 1B Todd Helton (2001-02, 2004), 2B DJ LeMahieu (2014, 2017-18), 2B Brendon Rodgers (2022), 3B Nolan Arenado (2013-20), SS Neifi Pérez (2000), SS Troy Tulowitzki (2010-11), Walker and González.

Prior to 2023, 14 Major League rookies have been honored with a Gold Glove since the award’s inception in 1957. Doyle becomes the second Rockies rookie to earn the honor, joining Arenado in 2013, as well as the first National League rookie outfielder to win a Gold Glove in history (Elias).

Doyle finished the season with 19 defensive runs saved, the sixth-most among all Major League position players and the most among center fielders. Prior to the 2023 season, no center fielder in Rockies history had finished a season with more than six DRS since Sports Information Solutions began tracking the stat in 2003. The 25-year-old’s 16 outs above average were the most among all outfielders and led all National League center fielders by seven (Bader, Call & Outman: nine OAA) while his 14 runs prevented were ranked as the second-most in the Majors and most among outfielders. Doyle led the Majors with a 24.5 UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating, Fangraphs), nearly doubling second-place Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 13.8 mark, while Michael Harris Jr. ranked second among center fielders with a 5.3 UZR.

The Warrenton, Va. native’s 120-game active errorless streak is currently the seventh-longest in the Majors and the second-longest in the National League. The streak is the longest errorless streak in franchise history for a rookie, surpassing Matt Reynold’s 94-game streak from 2010-11. Doyle’s 10 outfield assists tied for the ninth-most among Major Leaguers, tied for the fifth-most in the NL.

Following tonight’s announcement on ESPN, fans can vote for a player in each league to determine who will be named the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners. A combination of the national fan vote and the SDI will determine who takes home the honor.

Voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award presented by SABR will begin online at www.Rawlings.com on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 8:30 p.m. ET and will remain open until Thursday, Nov. 9, at 11:59 p.m. ET. The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners will be unveiled at the Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony in New York City on Friday, Nov. 10.
