Athletics acquire C Jhonny Pereda from Miami for cash considerations
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics acquired catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Miami Marlins for cash considerations, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated catcher Kyle McCann for assignment.
Pereda made his Major League debut with Miami last year and hit .231 with four RBI in 20 games over four stints with the Marlins. He spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Jacksonville where he batted .297 with four home runs, 14 RBI and an .829 OPS in 49 games. Opponents were successful in just 4-of-8 (50.0%) stolen base attempts with him behind the plate with the Marlins and 34-of-50 (68.0%) with the Jumbo Shrimp The 28-year-old right-handed hitter was originally signed by the Cubs out of Venezuela in 2013 and has played in the Cubs, Red Sox, Giants, Reds and Marlins farm systems in his 11 seasons as a professional. Pereda is a .260 hitter with 29 home runs and 279 RBI in 731 career games in the minors.
McCann made his Major League debut and spent the entire season with the A’s last year, batting .236 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 54 games as the back-up catcher. He made all 41 of his starts in games in which the opponent started a right-handed pitcher. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter was the A’s fourth round selection in the 2019 draft and is a .223 hitter with 55 home runs and 194 RBI in 355 career games in the minors.
