Astros sign free agent Niko Goodrum
Will report to camp tomorrow; Also sign LHP Rosscup to minor league deal
HOUSTON, TX - The Astros have signed free agent Niko Goodrum to a one-year contract, General Manager James Click announced today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Goodrum, 30, has spent the past four seasons (2018-21) with the Detroit Tigers after making his Major League debut with the Twins in 2017. A switch-hitter, Goodrum has displayed versatility throughout his five seasons in the Major Leagues, with starts at second base (114), shortstop (147), first base (39), third base (10) and in the outfield (56). In 2021, he appeared in 90 games overall, hitting .214 (62x290) with nine home runs and 33 RBI with 14 stolen bases.
In 2018, Goodrum reached career highs in games (131), at-bats (444), doubles (29), home runs (16) and RBI (53), playing the majority of games at second base. In the abbreviated 2020 season, he was a Gold Glove finalist as a shortstop, committing just one error in his 31 games for a .991 fielding pct.
Goodrum will report to camp on Wednesday and will wear #11. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Jairo Solis has been designated for assignment.
ROSSCUP SIGNED TO MINOR LEAGUE DEAL
The Astros also signed LHP Zac Rosscup to a minor league contract that includes an invite to Major League Spring Training camp. Rosscup reported to camp today and will wear #58.
Rosscup has spent parts of eight seasons 2013-19, 2021) in the Major Leagues, exclusively as a reliever. Most recently, he appeared in four games for the Colorado Rockies in 2021 (3.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO). In 120 career appearances, he has tallied 117 strikeouts in 86.2 innings of work. Additionally, he has held left-handed hitters to a .155 batting average (23x148).
Rosscup began his career with the Cubs, pitching in parts of four seasons (2013-17) in the Majors with them. He later would pitch for the Rockies (2017), Dodgers (2018-19), Mariners (2019) and Blue Jays (2019) before returning to the Rockies last season. For his career: 5-2, 120 G, 4.83 ERA, 86.2 IP, 86 H, 49 ER, 56 BB, 117 SO.
