HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros player development department has named RHP Logan VanWey the Astros upper-level Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May and IF Shay Whitcomb the Astros upper-level Minor League Player of the Month for May. The Astros also named OF Luis Baez the Astros lower-level Minor League Player of the Month for May and RHP Joey Mancini the Astros lower-level Pitcher of the Month for May.

VanWey, 25, went 4-0 with a 3.29 ERA (5ER/13.2IP) in 12 appearances in May for Triple A Sugar Land. VanWey also recorded 19 strikeouts, a 1.02 WHIP and a .178 opponent batting average during May. For the season, VanWey has notched a 3.34 ERA (11ER/29.2IP) with 38 strikeouts and a .222 opponent batting average. VanWey went undrafted out of Missouri Southern State and signed with the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on July 28, 2022.

Whitcomb, 25, batted .326 (31x95) with 19 runs, eight doubles, two triples, six home runs, 19 RBI, 14 walks, four stolen bases and a 1.060 OPS in 25 games in May with Triple A Sugar Land. This season Whitcomb is batting .299 (55x184) with 11 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 40 RBI, seven stolen bases and a .912 OPS. Whitcomb ranks tied for sixth in RBI in the Pacific Coast League this season. The 25-year-old was selected in fifth round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft from the University of California-San Diego by the Astros. Whitcomb is rated as the Astros number 30 overall prospect by MLB.com.

Baez, 20, hit .314 (33x105) with 12 runs, seven doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI, two stolen bases and a .875 OPS in 25 games in May with High A Asheville. For the season, Baez is hitting .285 (51x179) with 10 doubles, seven home runs, 26 RBI and a .791 OPS in 43 games with High A Asheville. In the South Atlantic League, he ranks fourth in hits and sixth in total bases (82). Baez was signed as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 15, 2022, from Bani, Dominican Republic. Baez is rated as the Astros number two overall prospect by MLB.com.

Mancini, 23, went 2-1 with a 0.60 ERA (1ER/15IP) in four appearances in May with High A Asheville. The 23-year-old also recorded 22 strikeouts, a 0.73 WHIP and a .120 opponent batting during the month. This season Mancini has notched a 2.41 ERA (9ER/33.2IP) with 41 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP and a .195 opponent batting average in 10 appearances. The right-hander was promoted to Double A Corpus Christi on May 28th. The Astros selected Mancini in the 15th round of the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Boston College.
