Astros announce 2024 coaching staff

Omar López promoted to bench coach

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros have announced the Major League coaching staff under first-year manager Joe Espada for the 2024 season. Astros first base coach Omar López has been promoted to bench coach, Dave Clark returns to the organization as the first base coach and Jason Bell joins the Major League staff as the quality assurance coach.

In 2024, López, 46, will enter his fifth season as part of the Astros Major League staff, but will be in his 26th season overall in the Astros organization. López served as the Astros first base coach from 2020-23. He also filled in for Gary Pettis as the club’s third base coach from September 2020 through the 2021 season while Pettis recovered from multiple myeloma. In 2023, López was the manager of Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He was also named the Texas League Manager of the Year in 2018 after guiding the Corpus Christi Hooks to an 82-56 record and a spot in the postseason.

Clark, 61, will join the Astros coaching staff as the first base coach in 2024. It will be his second stint with the Astros Major League coaching staff as he spent five seasons with the Astros, serving as first base coach (2013) and third base coach (2009-12). He also served as the Astros interim manager for the final 13 games of the 2009 season. Clark was later a part of the Detroit Tigers coaching staff for seven seasons (2014-20). Additionally, Clark played 13 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder with the Guardians (1986-89), Cubs (1990, 1997), Royals (1991), Pirates (1992-96), Dodgers (1996) and Astros (1998).

Bell, 33, will join the Astros Major League coaching staff as the quality assurance coach in 2024, but will be in his eighth season overall in the Astros organization. Bell served as an Astros minor league field coordinator from 2019- 2023, where he oversaw minor league Spring Training. He was also the Assistant Director, Player Development in 2023. In 2018, Bell was the manager at Class A Short Season Tri-City and led the club to a New York-Penn League Championship title. He joined the Astros organization in 2017 as a development coach at Class A Quad Cities.

Third base coach Pettis returns for his 10th season and is the longest-tenured member of the Major League staff. Hitting coach Alex Cintrón will enter his eighth season on the staff. The 2024 season will be the sixth for both pitching coach Josh Miller and hitting coach Troy Snitker. Major League coach Michael Collins will be in his fifth season as part of the Astros Major League staff, while pitching coach Bill Murphy is entering his fourth season. Assistant hitting coach Jason Kanzler is returning for his third season on the Major League staff. Tommy Kawamura, who joined the staff as the Major League game planning coach in 2023, returns for his second season.
