Astros announce 2023 coaching staff
Entire World Series championship staff to return with one addition
HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have announced that the entire Major League coaching staff from the 2022 World Series championship club will return for the 2023 season, with one new addition.
Third base coach Gary Pettis returns for his ninth season and is the longest-tenured member of the Major League staff. Hitting coach Alex Cintron will enter his seventh season on the staff while bench coach Joe Espada will be in his sixth season. The 2023 season will be the fifth for both pitching coach Josh Miller and hitting coach Troy Snitker. First base coach Omar Lopez and Major League coach Michael Collins will be in their fourth season as part of the Astros Major League staff while quality assurance coach Dan Firova and pitching coach Bill Murphy are each entering their third season. Jason Kanzler, who joined the staff as a Major League coach in 2022, returns for his second season but with a new title. He will serve as assistant hitting coach.
The Astros will also add an additional coach for 2023, with Tommy Kawamura transitioning from the baseball operations staff to the coaching staff as Major League game planning coach. Kawamura had served as the Astros manager, advanced scouting, for the past several seasons.
The Astros current staff has played a significant role in much of the recent, historic run of success enjoyed by the Astros Major League club. That includes six consecutive appearances in the American League Championship Series, four World Series appearances and two World Series championships. During this run, the Astros have ranked at or near the top of the MLB rankings in team pitching, hitting and defense.
