INF Armando Alvarez Optioned to Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected infielder Jacob Wilson from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. Infielder Armando Alvarez was optioned to Las Vegas during the All-Star Break on July 17.

Wilson was the A’s first round selection and the sixth pick overall in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft and is the A’s number one prospect according to MLB.com. He is batting a combined .438 with seven home runs, 34 RBI and a 1.161 OPS in 46 games with Double-A Midland, Las Vegas and the A’s affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League. The 22-year-old right-handed hitter was on the injured list from May 18 to June 24 with tendinitis in his right knee. Wilson has just 13 strikeouts in 200 plate appearances, an average of 15.4 plate appearances per strikeout. He is a .401 career hitter with a 1.058 OPS in 72 games in the minor leagues and has played exclusively at shortstop on defense. The son of former Major Leaguer Jack Wilson, Jacob is the first A’s draft pick to reach the majors in the season after he was drafted since Huston Street was drafted in 2004 and debuted in 2005.

Alvarez was selected from Las Vegas on June 22 and hit .261 with a RBI in seven games with Oakland in his Major League debut. He has spent the balance of the season with the Aviators where he has a .311 average, eight home runs, 33 RBI and a .929 OPS in 47 games.
