A’s select C/1B Soderstrom and INF Gelof from Las Vegas; recall RHP Tarnok
LHP Lovelady and C Piña placed on IL; INF Wade Outrighted to Las Vegas
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected catcher/first baseman Tyler Soderstrom and infielder Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled right-handed pitcher Freddy Tarnok from Las Vegas, the club announced today. The A’s also placed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady on the 15-day injured list retroactive to July 11 with a strained left forearm, placed catcher Manny Piña on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 11 with a left wrist contusion and outrighted infielder Tyler Wade to Las Vegas.
Soderstrom is listed as the A’s number one prospect by MLB.com, Gelof is ranked third and Tarnok is fifth.
Soderstrom has spent the entire season at Las Vegas and is batting .254 with 20 home runs, 59 RBI and a .839 OPS in 69 games. He ranks fourth in the Pacific Coast League in home runs, tied for sixth in extra base hits (37) and tied for eighth in RBI. The 21-year-old left-handed hitter started 35 games at catcher, 24 at first base and nine at designated hitter. He also played the entire game at first base for the American League in the All-Star Futures game at Seattle last Saturday and went 1-for-2 with a walk. Soderstrom was the A’s first round pick and 26th selection overall in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft. He is a .272 career hitter with 61 home runs, 213 RBI and an .858 OPS in 260 games in three seasons in the minors.
Gelof has also played for Las Vegas all year and batted .304 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a .930 OPS in 69 games. He ranks third in the Pacific Coast League in doubles (21), tied for sixth in stolen bases, eighth in runs (60) and tied for ninth in extra base hits (34). The 23-year-old right-handed hitter batted .413 with five home runs and 17 RBI over his final 10 games after connecting for seven home runs and 27 RBI over his first 59 contests. He started 68 games at second base and one at designated hitter. Gelof was the A’s second round selection in the 2021 First-Year player Draft and is a .292 hitter with 37 home runs, 140 RBI and an .884 OPS in 201 games in three seasons in the minors.
Tarnok started the season on the injured list with a strained right shoulder and began a rehab assignment with the A’s affiliate in the Arizona Complex League on June 9. He was transferred to Las Vegas on June 15 and was reinstated from the IL and optioned to Las Vegas last Saturday. The 24-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.66 ERA and .176 opponents batting average in six minor league starts overall this year. Tarnok was originally selected by Atlanta in the third round of the 2017 First-Year Player draft and made his Major League debut with one relief appearance with the Braves last year. He was traded to Oakland in a three-team, nine-player deal on Dec. 12, 2022.
Lovelady returns to the injured list after missing 14 games from June 16 to July 1 with a strained left elbow. He allowed three runs on four hits and no walks in 2.1 innings over three relief appearances following his return from the IL and is 0-3 with a 4.63 ERA and .667 opponents OPS in 27 games overall with Oakland. Piña began the season on the injured list with a sprained left wrist and was reinstated on July 4. He went 3-for-12 (.250) with a home run in four games with the A’s. Wade batted .255 with two home runs and four RBI in 26 games over two stints with Oakland.
