June 2nd, 2024

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated right-handed pitcher Luis Medina from the 60-day injured list and designated right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks for assignment, the club announced today.

Medina began the season on the injured list after suffering a right MCL sprain during spring training and will be making his season debut. He made two rehab starts with Triple-A Las Vegas on May 22 and 28, combining for 6.0 innings pitched, eight hits, seven earned runs, one home run, three hit batters, three walks, and seven strikeouts across the two outings. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher was acquired by the A’s along with LHP Ken Waldichuk, LHP JP Sears, and INF Cooper Bowman in a trade with the Yankees in exchange for RHP Frankie Montas and RHP Lou Trivino on August 1, 2022. Medina went 3-10 with a 5.42 ERA (66 ER/109.2 IP) with the A’s in 2023 to go along with 106 strikeouts and 57 walks.

Brooks went 0-2 with a 5.42 ERA (14 ER/21.2 IP) across four starts with the A’s, including two quality starts on May 15 at Houston and May 21 vs. Colorado. The 34 year-old right-hander tallied 10 strikeouts, six walks, one hit batter, and four home runs. Brooks signed with the A’s on a minor league contract on February 9 after previously pitching for Kansas City (2014-15), Oakland (2015-19), Baltimore (2019), and St. Louis (2022).
