OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics recalled right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia and selected left-handed pitcher Sam Selman and right-handed pitcher Parker Markel from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The A’s optioned left-handed pitchers Adam Kolarek and Zach Logue and right-handed pitcher Jake Lemoine to Las Vegas. To clear space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies and outfielder Skye Bolt were transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Markel was signed by the A’s to a minor league contract on March 10 and was 3-0 with a save and a 1.89 ERA in 17 relief appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas. He held the opposition to a .191 batting average and is tied for fourth among Pacific Coast League relievers with 28 strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-handed pitcher was a 39th round selection of Tampa Bay in the 2010 draft and made his Major League debut with Seattle in 2019. He pitched for both the Mariners and Pirates that year and combined for an 0-1 record and a 7.77 ERA in 20 relief appearances in his only big league experience.
Selman joins the A’s for the second time this year as he was originally called up on April 18 as a substitute player. He made one appearance on April 22 against Texas, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out five in 2.2 scoreless innings, before he was returned to Las Vegas on April 23. The 31-year-old left-hander logged three saves and a 3.24 ERA in seven relief appearances following his return to the Aviators and is 1-0 with three saves, a 1.98 ERA and .188 opponents batting average in 11 appearances overall at Triple-A. He walked nine in 13.2 innings but struck out 18.
Tapia was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on April 30 and had a save and a 3.24 ERA in eight relief appearances with Las Vegas. He began the season by logging a 3.60 ERA in five outings with Triple-A Omaha and is 0-0 with a save, a 3.38 ERA and .213 opponents batting average in 13 relief appearances overall. The 30-year-old right-hander struck out 10 and walked six without surrendering a home run in 13.1 innings. Tapia made his Major League debut with Boston in 2020 and is 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 39 career appearances in the majors with the Red Sox (2020), Mariners (2021) and Royals (2021).
Kolarek was recalled from Las Vegas on April 10 and was 0-1 with a 4.58 ERA and .294 opponents batting average in 15 relief appearances with the A’s. Lemoine was recalled from Las Vegas on May 20 for his second stint with the A’s this year and allowed seven runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings over two relief appearances. He has a 7.71 ERA in nine relief appearances overall. Logue has three stints with Oakland and is 2-4 with a 5.47 ERA in six games, including five starts.
Jefferies was placed on the 15-day injured list May 20 with right arm nerve irritation and was later diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. Bolt was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique to start the season. He began a rehab assignment on May 13 but that was shut down on May 18 after he strained his left hamstring.
