A’s announce roster moves
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed left-handed pitchers A.J Puk and Kirby Snead, right-handed pitcher Lou Trivino, catcher Austin Allen, infielder Jed Lowrie and outfielder Chad Pinder on the COVID-19 injured list, the club announced today. The A’s also added left-handed pitcher Sam Selman and infielders Nick Allen and Christian Lopes to the roster as substitute players.
Nick Allen is hitting .319 with a home run, two RBI, nine runs scored and six walks in 12 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He went 6-for-12 (.500) with two triples, a home run and three walks in seven games this spring before he was optioned to Las Vegas on March 27. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter was the A’s third round selection in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and will be making his Major League debut. Allen is a .269 career hitter with 11 home runs and 116 RBI in 329 games in five seasons in the minors.
Lopes is batting .289 with three doubles, four RBI and five walks in 10 games with Las Vegas. He was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and hit .333 with a home run and six RBI in 15 games before he was reassigned to Las Vegas on April 4. The 29-year-old right-handed hitter was originally selected by Toronto in the seventh round of the 2011 draft and is a .263 hitter with 61 home runs, 427 RBI and a .740 OPS in 937 games over 10 seasons in the minors with the Toronto (2012-17), Texas (2018-19), Arizona (2021) and Oakland (2022) organizations. Lopes will be making his Major League debut.
Selman has not allowed a run in four games and 5.1 innings with Las Vegas. Opponents are hitting .167 and he has walked four and struck out four. The 31-year-old left-hander was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on March 13 and compiled a 2.08 ERA in four relief appearances with the A’s this spring. Selman made his ML debut with San Francisco in 2019 and is 1-2 with a save, a 4.77 ERA and .200 opponents batting average in 59 games over three seasons in the majors with San Francisco (2019-21) and Los Angeles-AL (2021).
