A’s announce coaching staff
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s announced their coaching staff for the 2022 season today, adding Brad Ausmus as bench coach, Tommy Everidge as hitting coach and Chris Cron as assistant hitting coach. Darren Bush moves to third base coach/run prevention coach, Eric Martins is now first base coach/infield coach and Mike Aldrete takes over as quality control coach. Scott Emerson returns as pitching coach and Marcus Jensen is back as the A’s bullpen coach.
Ausmus has five years of experience as a Major League manager, guiding Detroit to a 314-332 record and one postseason appearance from 2014-17 and Los Angeles (AL) to a 72-90 record in 2019. He played for four teams in an 18-year career from 1993-2010 and was a .251 hitter with 80 home runs and 607 RBI. The former catcher was an All-Star in 1999 and won Gold Gloves with Houston in 2001, 02 and 06. Ausmus joined the Padres as Special Assistant, Baseball Operations in 2011 and spent three seasons in that capacity before being named manager of Detroit. He also served as a Special Assistant to the General Manager with the Angels in 2018.
Everidge joins the ML staff after spending eight seasons as a hitting coach in the A’s farm system. He began his coaching career at Short-Season Vermont (2014-15) and also had stops in Single-A Stockton (2016-17), Double-A Midland (2018-20) and Triple-A Las Vegas (2021). Everidge had a nine-year playing career, including more than six years in the A’s system. He was selected by Oakland in the 10th round of the 2004 draft and made his ML debut with the A’s in 2009, hitting .224 with two home runs and seven RBI in 24 games. The 38-year-old played for three organizations in 2010 and concluded his playing career with two seasons at Lancaster in the independent Atlantic League from 2011-12.
Cron comes to the A’s from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization where he served as minor league field coordinator last year. He has 20 years of minor league managerial experience including 16 in the Chicago White Sox farm system from 1995-2010. Cron also managed for three years at Double-A Erie in the Detroit organization from 2011-13 before spending four seasons as the Diamondbacks minor league hitting coordinator from 2014-18. He last managed at Triple-A Reno in 2019 and was scheduled to manage the Aces in 2020 before the minor league season was canceled. Cron played in 12 games in two seasons in the majors with California (1991) and Chicago-AL (1992) and is the father of C.J. Cron and Kevin Cron.
