A’s announce 2020 Major League coaching staff
Eric Martins will serve as Assistant Hitting Coach
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s announced the Major League coaching staff for Manager Bob Melvin entering the 2020 season.
Eric Martins joins the staff as the assistant hitting coach, Mike Aldrete moves to first base coach and Al Pedrique takes over at third base for Matt Williams, who was named the Manager of the Kia Tigers in the Korean Baseball Organization. Bench coach Ryan Christenson, hitting coach Darren Bush, pitching coach Scott Emerson, bullpen coach Marcus Jensen and quality control coach Mark Kotsay return in their same roles.
Martins has spent the last five seasons as a hitting coach in the A’s farm system. He made his coaching debut at Double-A Midland in 2015, spent three seasons at Triple-A Nashville from 2016-18, and moved to Triple-A Las Vegas last season. Prior to that, Martins scouted for the A’s from 2007-14 and his signings include A.J. Griffin, Daniel Robertson and 2014 first round pick Matt Chapman. The 46-year-old was originally drafted by Oakland in 1994 and played professionally for 11 seasons, topping out at Triple-A.
Also returning are head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta, assistant athletic trainers Jeff Collins and Brian Schulman, strength and conditioning coach Josh Cuffe, assistant strength and conditioning coach Terence Brannic and Major League massage therapist Ozzie Lyles. Phil Pohl returns as bullpen catcher and will be joined by newcomer Dustin Hughes.
