A's agree to terms with RHP Jeurys Familia on one-year contract
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jeurys Familia on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s placed left-handed pitcher Kirby Snead on the 60-day injured list with a strained left shoulder.
Familia was a non-roster invitee with Arizona this spring and was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and .167 opponents batting average in eight relief appearances when he was released by the Diamondbacks on Friday. He pitched for Philadelphia and Boston last year and was a combined 2-3 with a 6.09 ERA and .908 opponents OPS in 48 relief appearances. The 33-year-old right-hander has pitched 11 seasons in the majors with the Mets (2012-18, 19-21), A’s (2018), Red Sox (2022) and Phillies (2022) and is 34-28 with 125 saves, a 3.51 ERA and .676 OPS in 547 games. Familia spent a little over two months with the A’s in 2018 after being acquired from the Mets for Will Toffey, Bobby Wahl and international bonus money on July 21. He pitched in 30 games for Oakland and was 4-2 with a save and a 3.45 ERA.
Snead made one appearance for the A’s this spring in the Cactus League opener on Feb. 25 against Arizona and picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning. He went 1-1 with one save, a 5.84 ERA and .861 opponents OPS in 46 games with Oakland last year and also posted a 2-0 record, one save, a 4.61 ERA and .638 OPS in 11 outings with Triple-A Las Vegas.
