Pirates sign six players from 2019 Draft
The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players from the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.
Round 2: Matt Gorski, OF, 6-4/195, Indiana University
Hit .271 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 46 RBI in 55 games as a junior at Indiana and took home second-team All-Big Ten honors...Was the highest IU draft pick since Kyle Schwarber was selected fourth in 2014...Was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2018 while leading the Hoosiers in batting (.356), hits (79) and total bases (123).
Comp B Round: Jared Triolo, INF, 6-3/197, University of Houston
Hit .332 with 18 doubles, seven home runs, 44 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 56 games this season as a junior at the University of Houston. Was named a second-team American Athletic Conference selection as a third baseman in 2019...Hit .344 in 2018, which led the Cougars and ranked third in the conference.
Round 3: Matt Fraizer, OF, 6-3/205, University of Arizona
Hit .412 with six doubles, two triples, one home run and 28 RBI in 19 games as a junior in 2019 at the University of Arizona...Is the ninth player ever drafted by the Pirates out of the University of Arizona and it marks the fifth time in the last six years in which the Pirates drafted a player from the school...Compiled a .300 batting average and 60 RBI in 106 games during his three-year career as a Wildcat...His father, Terance, was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 24th round of the 1992 MLB Draft.
Round 7: Blake Sabol, OF, 6-4/210, USC
Hit .268 with eight doubles, three triples, three home runs and 22 RBI in 55 games as junior at USC...Was selected to play in the 2016 Perfect Game All-American Game for the top 50 players in the nation that year...Is the second cousin of former Steeler Troy Polamalu...Played in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2018 and earned All-American honors while being ranked as the 63rd-best collegiate draft prospect.
Round 8: Austin Roberts, RHP, 6-0/215, Sacramento (CA) State University
Went 5-4 with six saves, a 3.18 ERA (73.2ip/25er) and 84 strikeouts in 22 appearances (nine starts) as a junior in 2019 with Sacramento State University...Earned All-WAC first-team honors as a sophomore in 2018 after going 4-2 with two saves and a team-best 1.83 ERA...Was a Perfect Game pre-season All-conference team selection.
Round 10: Cameron Junker, RHP, 6-4/220, Notre Dame
Went 3-5 with a 4.19 ERA (77.1ip/36er) and 73 strikeouts in 15 starts as a junior in 2019 at Notre Dame; his 4.19 ERA led all Notre Dame starting pitchers...Ranked eighth among the ACC leaders in batting average against (.220) in 2019...Was the starting pitcher in each of Notre Dame’s three shutouts in 2019...Was named a 2016 Rawkings-Perfect Game honorable mention All-American.
The Pirates have now signed seven players from the 2019 Draft.
