Pirates Acquire Bailey Falter From Philadelphia

August 1st, 2023

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for infielder Rodolfo Castro.

The 26-year-old Falter has gone 8-12 with a 4.56 ERA (158.0ip/80er) and 136 strikeouts in 50 appearances (24 starts) in parts of three seasons in the big leagues with the Phillies.

Falter spent a majority of this season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he went 2-1 with a 4.21 ERA (47.0ip/22er) and 35 strikeouts in 11 starts. He also made eight appearances (seven starts) with the Philies, going 0-7 with a 5.13 ERA (40.1ip/23er) and 28 strikeouts.

Falter spent his entire career with the Phillies organization after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.

He was a member of Philadelphia’s Opening Day roster in 2022 and went 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA (84.0ip/36er) and 74 strikeouts in 20 appearances (16 starts). Falter was a member of Philadelphia’s Wild Card, Division Series and LCS rosters in 2022 (he started Game Four of the NLCS vs. San Diego). He finished his 2022 campaign with a streak of 14 straight starts with two or fewer walks allowed while posting the third-lowest walk percentage (4.3 percent) in the National League (minimum 250 batters faced) from June 17 through the end of the season.

He made his big league debut in 2021 and recorded at least one strikeout in each of his first 17 career appearances, tied for the longest streak to begin a career by a Phillies reliever (also Mark Leiter).
