Rookie first baseman Pete Alonso of the New York Mets has been named the W.B. Mason National League Player of the Week and All-Star outfielder Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels has been named the W.B. Mason American League Player of the Week. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Alonso earned his first career Player of the Week Award and is the second Mets player to be awarded weekly honors in 2019, joining his teammate Noah Syndergaard (May 6th). The University of Florida product is the Mets’ first position player to accomplish the feat since Asdrúbal Cabrera for the week ending August 29, 2016. Trout claimed his fifth career AL Player of the Week Award and his second of the 2019 campaign (also April 7th). Mike tied Tim Salmon for the second-most weekly awards in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan (6).

In recognition of their Player of the Week Awards, Pete Alonso and Mike Trout will each be awarded a specially engraved watch courtesy of Artinian.

• Posted a slash line of .417/.548/1.042 with seven runs scored, 10 hits, three doubles, four home runs, seven RBI and seven walks over seven games played.
• Clubbed his 27th home run of the season yesterday against the Chicago Cubs, surpassing Darryl Strawberry (26) for the most home runs in a single season by a rookie in franchise history.
• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, his 27 round-trippers are the fourth-most by a rookie before the All-Star break in MLB history, trailing eventual Rookies of the Year Mark McGwire (33), Aaron Judge (30) and José Abreu (29).
• Entering play today, he paces qualified Major League rookies in runs scored (50), hits (77), extra-base hits (46), home runs, RBI (61), walks (32) and slugging percentage (.642).

• Batted .483 (14-for-29) with seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI, four walks, a stolen base and a .559 on-base percentage across seven games.
• On Wednesday, recorded his second multi-homer game of the season (also April 5th) to go along with a career-high seven RBI, becoming the first Angels player to log at least two homers and seven RBI in a single contest since his former teammate Torii Hunter on July 4, 2010.
• Eclipsed the 20-homer mark for the eighth consecutive season in the aforementioned outing. Became the seventh player in Major League history to post eight seasons of 20-or-more home runs prior to turning 28 years old, joining fellow Most Valuable Players Giancarlo Stanton and Alex Rodriguez, as well as Hall of Famers Frank Robinson, Eddie Mathews, Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott.
• Enters play today with 22 home runs on the year, which marks the fourth time in his career in which he totaled at least 20-or-more homers before the All-Star break.

Second baseman Kolten Wong of the St. Louis Cardinals earned his first career Play of the Week honor. In the top of the third inning of last night’s game at Busch Stadium, Wong fielded a ground ball hit up the middle by using his glove to push the ball to shortstop Paul DeJong, who stepped on the base before firing over to first to complete the double play. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Jackie Bradley Jr.’s leaping catch at the wall to rob an extra-base hit; Trea Turner’s sliding stop on a ball hit up the middle and his throw home to retire the lead runner; Anthony Santander’s leaping catch at the wall to rob a home run; Tyler Naquin’s diving catch before doubling up the runner at first in a one-run game during the top of the ninth inning; Richie Martin’s fully-extended dive on a grounder hit into the hole and his throw across the diamond; and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s run scored after tagging up on a shallow pop-up to the second baseman.
